Malaysia deploying DNA experts to identify disaster victims, pending Nepal’s go-ahead

On Monday, Nepal observed a national day of mourning in remembrance of those who perished in devastating glacial floods. Families of the missing hydropower workers, feared trapped in tunnels, fervently prayed for rescuers to find them alive. The catastrophic event on August 26 near the China-Nepal border claimed at least 1,398 lives, with over 5,500 still unaccounted for, including approximately 800 foreigners.

National flags were flown at half-mast, and candlelight vigils were planned to honor the traditional Hindu mourning rituals on the 13th day after death. The rescue efforts, led by the Nepal Army, continue at an intense pace, focusing on search, rescue, and tunnel operations. Families of the missing workers, gathered in Kathmandu, expressed their hope, demanding faster action from the government.

Foreign experts, including an Australian tunnel rescue expert, underscored the unprecedented nature of the rescue operation. Despite challenges, the international community has rallied to support Nepal, with the UN appealing for $50 million to aid over 84,000 people affected by the disaster.
