Local Gov’t Minister Joins Accra Mayor, Traders to Mark September National Sanitation Day

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga joined Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey and traders at Tudu to commemorate the September edition of the National Sanitation Day. This event took place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, as part of an inspection tour conducted by Ayariga and the Mayor to evaluate the level of participation and adherence to sanitation rules among traders and businesses in the capital city.

The inspection commenced at the Kinbu Traffic Light and proceeded through Tudu and other main roads in the Central Business District. During the event, Mayor Allotey informed the Minister about the extent of trader involvement and discussed the steps the Accra Metropolitan Assembly is taking to maintain cleanliness in the Central Business District beyond the regular monthly sanitation exercise.

When they reached Tudu, Ayariga expressed his satisfaction with the level of participation and joined the traders in the cleaning activity. He took a broom from a trader and personally swept a portion of the street, showcasing the cleanliness standards that residents and businesses are expected to uphold. The Minister and the Mayor also collected litter as they walked along the route, emphasizing that maintaining a clean Accra is a shared responsibility among authorities, businesses, traders, and residents alike.
