Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt: Musk praises AfD's electoral victory

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk congratulated the AfD party on their electoral triumph in Sachsen-Anhalt, following their success in the regional election. Musk expressed satisfaction by commenting on a post from AfD leader Alice Weidel, who had praised the party's candidate Ulrich Siegmund's victory in the Genthin electoral district. Siegmund responded to Musk, thanking him for his support.

In the Landtag election in Sachsen-Anhalt, the CDU failed to win any direct mandates. All 41 electoral districts saw the AfD candidates emerge victorious, including the newly-elected Ulrich Siegmund in Genthin. The AfD secured 49.0% of first-choice votes in Genthin, compared to 24.0% for the CDU candidate Thomas Staudt. This marked a 22.4% increase in support for Siegmund compared to the 2021 election.

Previously, in 2021, Thomas Staudt had won the direct mandate in Genthin. The CDU's chairman, Sven Schulze, suffered a defeat in his own district, losing the Magdeburg III constituency to AfD candidate Christian Mertens. Schulze received 31.7% of first-choice votes, while Mertens secured 35.2%. Schulze, who had taken over as Minister-President in early 2023 after serving as the Economic Minister and a European Parliament representative, had been appointed by the CDU.

So far, there are no reports of any unrest or violent incidents during the election in Magdeburg. The police presence in the city's center has begun to disperse, with several police vehicles departing their stations. Media representatives await further statements regarding the CDU's heavy electoral losses.
