Korea's science diplomacy in the age of technopolitics

In the 21st century, the traditional pillars of geopolitics are being challenged by the rise of technology as a powerful force in shaping nations' destinies. Scientists and historians agree that while territory, natural resources, and military might have historically been the primary sources of national influence, technological capabilities are now equally, if not more, important in determining a nation's standing on the global stage.

The concept of "technopolitics" was introduced by science historian Gabrielle Hecht to explain how political goals can be embedded within the design of nuclear technology. However, the scope of technopolitics extends far beyond the realm of nuclear power. In today's world, states are increasingly investing in, controlling, and utilizing technology not only as an industrial asset but as a strategic instrument that can influence political, economic, diplomatic, and security matters.

This shift towards the integration of technology and geopolitics is now evident in national strategies. In August of last year, for instance, the United States released its National Security Science and Technology Strategy, placing science and technology at the forefront of national security considerations. This new approach signifies a departure from traditional geopolitical strategies and highlights the growing importance of technology in international relations.
