Jakarta airport extends closure after volcano eruption

Jakarta's main airport and three other Indonesian airports have extended their closures due to ongoing volcanic eruptions, leaving hundreds of thousands stranded. Mount Anak Krakatau, located about 150 kilometers from the capital, erupted on Saturday, releasing a fountain of lava and a cloud of volcanic ash. Eight airports halted operations on the weekend, disrupting thousands of flights and leaving over 270,000 passengers stranded since September 5, 2026.

Italian tourists Michel Migge and his girlfriend were among those affected, with their flight cancelled. Both are unsure whether to remain in Jakarta or find alternative travel options. Some airports, including Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, extended their closure until 6pm local time. Another small airport in South Sumatra resumed operations this morning, but the threat of further eruptions remains high.

The country's geology agency warned of the continued risk of incandescent rock ejection, heavy ashfall, and potential lava flows.
