Indonesia market fire kills 11, including six children

Indonesia's Papua region witnessed a devastating fire today, which claimed the lives of 11 individuals, among them six young children, according to police reports. The inferno erupted in the town of Paniai, nestled within Central Papua province, shortly after the stroke of midnight. The blaze rapidly engulfed multiple shophouses, prompting local police spokesman Henry J. Manurung to reveal during an inspection that 11 victims had perished due to severe burns.

Among the deceased, five were adults while the remaining six victims were children aged between two to nine years old.

The fire continued to blaze for over three hours, inflicting significant damage as it razed at least 40 kiosks and homes in the area. Despite the arrival of fire trucks and water cannons, the authorities struggled to control the intensity of the blaze, largely due to the close proximity of the destroyed structures. Police are currently investigating the origin of the fire, but the rapidly spreading flames and the tight clustering of houses and stalls have undoubtedly complicated the firefighting efforts.

It is important to note that such deadly fires are not an uncommon occurrence in Indonesia. In December, another tragic incident struck when a fire engulfed a seven-story office building in Central Jakarta, resulting in the loss of 22 lives. The initial police report suggested that an explosion involving a drone battery on the ground floor was the probable cause. Furthermore, a nickel-processing plant explosion in the east of the country in 2023 claimed the lives of at least 12 people.
