India set to pitch tech synergy for cementing BRICS

India intends to promote deeper collaboration and stronger government-aligned partnerships in artificial intelligence, advanced computing, quantum technologies, and semiconductor materials during the forthcoming BRICS summit. This emphasis on cutting-edge technologies arises as countries strive to counterheightening AI oligopolies and reduce risks associated with global semiconductor supply chains.

India aims to conclude three substantial multilateral undertakings during its tenure as chair of the BRICS alliance. Among these initiatives, the Global Research Advanced Infrastructure Network (GRAIN) scheme will provide researchers from participating nations with federated access to high-performance computing systems and supercomputers, according to an official.

"We are actively working towards establishing the science and research repository, a single digital platform where member states will exchange datasets and capabilities, specifically focusing on advanced materials engineering and functional nanostructures," added the individual. Establishing connections among chip design and deeptech startups across member countries through the proposed Startup Innovation Fund and Incubator Network is another priority.

"In all these areas, we have aimed to emulate the success of our domestic policies," said another official. "Other nations are keen to develop frameworks akin to AIkosh — our national, centralized platform for non-personal datasets — and AI models, or our incorporation of over 38,000 high-performance graphics processing units in our shared AI compute facility under the IndiaAI Mission."

The summit, only the second featuring the ten new partner nations, such as Malaysia, Nigeria, and Vietnam, will place a strong emphasis on enhancing cooperation in digital payment systems.
