IG Kanja to face Senators over failure to arrest Isiolo Governor

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is set to face the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) in connection with his failure to arrest Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan. The committee seeks an explanation from Kanja regarding the difficulties his office encountered while carrying out the directive to arrest the governor.

The summons to arrest Hassan was issued following his failure to comply with previous requests to answer audit queries concerning the usage of public funds. The governor declined to appear, citing local security commitments as his reason, a claim that the Senators firmly rejected.

During a prior meeting with the Senators, Kanja reiterated the authority granted under Article 125 of the constitution, which mandates the National Police Service (NPS) to support Parliament in cases where individuals refuse to comply with summonses. He affirmed that the police force is prepared to arrest governors if they receive formal instructions from the committee. The committee is expected to provide precise instructions on the circumstances and venue for the governor's presentation.
