I left Texas for Europe more than a decade ago. Living in France is affordable, and I'm happier.

Leah Young, a 34-year-old from Dallas, relocated to Europe over a decade ago and now resides in Lyon, France. She expresses contentment with her life in France, which includes access to affordable and high-quality healthcare. Her one-bedroom apartment in Lyon costs her $1,104 per month, and her weekly grocery bill amounts to $70.

Young, who is the founder of Fearless Abroad, an organization aiding Americans working remotely in relocating to Europe, shared her story about her journey of moving abroad. Initially, she envisioned a one-year stay in Europe but ended up staying for several years in various countries, including Spain, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and France.

Although she was initially apprehensive about the move due to unfamiliarity with the international environment, the visa process, and the cost of living, Young found that Lyon, a city in France, was an ideal place for her. She enjoys the city's small-town atmosphere and its proximity to the mountains and Mediterranean Sea. Young's living expenses in Lyon are relatively affordable, with rent for her 678-square-foot one-bedroom apartment in a historic building totaling €950 ($1,104) monthly.

Her utility bills fluctuate depending on the season, ranging from €50 in the summer to €350 in the winter. With a weekly grocery bill of €60 ($70) and occasional social outings, she finds her cost of living manageable. Despite missing her family and friends back in Texas, Young remains content with her life in France, noting that the quality of healthcare is excellent and not overly expensive.
