Huawei, Xiaomi target Apple with high-end phone launches ahead of foldable iPhone

Apple is set to unveil its first foldable iPhone on September 9, following in the footsteps of Android manufacturers who launched foldable phones years ago. However, this first foldable from Apple is likely to inherit many of the same challenges and compromises seen in previous Android foldables. One of these issues is the use of plastic screens, which tend to have excessive glare and fingerprint grease, leading to durability concerns.

Folding screens are also more prone to scratching and denting due to their softer nature. Another issue is the inclusion of a pre-applied screen protector, which users are advised not to remove or replace themselves, as this could cause touch abnormalities or display damage. Foldable phones have also historically offered inferior camera hardware due to their thinner, more complex design.

This means that Apple's foldable iPhone is likely to have worse camera capabilities compared to traditional iPhone Pro models. Furthermore, the iPhone Ultra may lack an IP rating, which indicates protection against water and dust, making it vulnerable to these elements. Lastly, despite rumors of a crease-free folding screen, Android OEMs have gradually minimized the display crease, with some models boasting a "zero-feel" crease.

Still, a crease may be visible in certain scenarios, and cold weather can further degrade screen durability in folding devices.
