Health Authorities Intensify Measures as Chikungunya Outbreak Spreads

Health authorities in Nowshera have stepped up efforts to curb the spread of chikungunya after detecting 8 additional cases in the Ziarat Kaka Sahib region, raising the total confirmed cases to 14 in the Spin Kanai union council. In response, surveillance has been expanded to surrounding areas, and larvicidal activities initiated to halt potential transmission.

District Health Officer Dr. Akram Shah announced the creation of a buffer zone between affected and unaffected union councils, alongside plans for indoor residual spraying, active case identification, and additional mosquito control measures. All confirmed patients are currently being treated at home, with Paracetamol and oral rehydration solution provided to residents.

Those requiring further medical attention will be referred to Category-D hospitals in Ziarat Kaka Sahib, Manki, and Akora Khattak. Teams will inspect homes for mosquito breeding sites, destroy larvae, and clear clogged sewage lines that could contribute to the spread. Lady health visitors and workers will assist in household surveillance and larval control, while public awareness campaigns have been launched to educate residents about chikungunya prevention.

Isolation wards have been set up, and samples from suspected patients have been sent to Khyber Medical University's Public Health Reference Laboratory for confirmation. Hospitals have received essential medicines for standard treatment, and a district control room has been established to coordinate outbreak-related information. Health officials stress that the situation is being closely monitored, with surveillance, early detection, and mosquito control intensifying to prevent further transmission.
