Hadi ready to face police over US ‘topple govt’ claim, says aide

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — The PAS president, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, is set to provide a statement to the police following their contact regarding his claim that the United States attempted to aid in the removal of the Malaysian government before the 2018 general election. His political secretary, Syahir Sulaiman, announced that Hadi is prepared to cooperate with the authorities, although no specific date has been determined for his statement, as reported by Berita Harian.

Syahir confirmed that Bukit Aman has reached out to him, and Hadi has acknowledged his readiness to assist the police. This claim was made during the 72nd PAS congress in Kelantan, where Hadi alleged that several PAS leaders were invited to meet representatives from the US Embassy during then-President Barack Obama's visit to Malaysia in 2014.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has refuted these allegations, stating that their representatives never offered assistance to help PAS remove the then-Barisan Nasional government. The US Chargé d’affaires ad interim, David H. Gamble Jr, emphasized that the United States has never sought to influence Malaysia's political leadership.
