Gig work shouldn’t be youth’s main source of income, says Puteri Umno chief

Puteri Umno chief Nurul Amal Fauzi has cautioned that gig work should not be the primary income source for Malaysian youth. According to a World Bank report, 31% of full-time gig workers entered the sector after being unable to find proper formal employment. Nurul Amal noted that highly-qualified graduates are being compelled to rely on gig work due to their lack of suitable job opportunities.

She urged the government to address the issue seriously and provide more stable, long-term job opportunities with promising career prospects. The World Bank report also highlighted that 34% of gig workers who couldn't secure formal employment were tertiary education graduates. Nurul Amal emphasized that the mismatch between graduate qualifications and job openings cannot be viewed as a short-term problem and called for concerted efforts to shape the next generation and resolve the issue over the next decade.
