Flight recorders recovered from 'devastating' Amazon cargo plane crash

The flight recorders from the Amazon cargo plane that crashed at Miami International Airport have been recovered, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The fatal incident occurred shortly before 14:00 local time on Sunday when the Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air, overshot the runway. Five individuals lost their lives, while five others sustained severe injuries.

The crash involved the plane colliding with two vehicles - a white van carrying seven people and a Toyota with three passengers - before coming to rest about 1,300 feet beyond the runway perimeter.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy emphasized that the focus remains on recovering the victims, stating that the investigation and access to the aircraft and evidence can wait. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been sent to NTSB headquarters for evaluation. Investigators are still in the fact-finding stage and have not determined the cause of the crash. They will examine various aspects, including the plane's systems, engines, weather conditions, and runway safety measures.

Homendy described the crash scene as "devastating," with debris scattered across the area. The recovery of victims' bodies is currently the top priority. Two of the four runways at Miami International Airport remained closed following the crash, causing further disruption to travel during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend. Amazon expressed its condolences for the loss of life, while 21 Air, the airline operating the plane, co-operated with the investigation.
