First Niger Bridge shut for emergency repairs

The Federal Ministry of Works has recently announced the closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for urgent maintenance and rehabilitation. This decision was made on Monday, September 7, 2026, as the bridge's condition had deteriorated significantly. The rehabilitation project is scheduled to be completed by September 21 and will involve several key repairs.

According to the ministry, the bridge's carriageway has become compromised and certain components have been damaged due to vandalism. These include portions of the expansion-joint steelwork and various nuts and bolts, such as those used in stanchions and steel trusses. To address these issues, the ministry plans to remove the deteriorated asphalt surface and replace it with a new 40mm asphalt wearing course. Additionally, other maintenance and safety works will be carried out during this period.

As part of the broader efforts to enhance safety and deter further vandalism, the Federal Government intends to install solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras at the site. The ministry has instructed motorists to utilize the Second Niger Bridge, accessible via Obosi, as they travel from Onitsha to Asaba in Delta State during the bridge's closure.

To minimize disruptions and ensure the safety of both road users and construction workers, traffic diversion arrangements, road signs, safety barriers, and traffic-control personnel will be deployed strategically.

The closure of the First Niger Bridge underscores the importance of regular maintenance and proactive measures to preserve critical infrastructure. The ministry's decision highlights the dedication to ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation networks across Nigeria.
