Fifa president Infantino will stand for re-election

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has announced his intention to run for re-election to the leadership role, according to a statement from the world governing body of football. Infantino, who has been in the position since 2016, has faced criticism following his controversial proposal to sell stakes in Fifa competitions to private investment firms.

This plan led to a global backlash, with Uefa, the governing body of European football, threatening to boycott all Fifa competitions, including the World Cup. Despite the controversy, Infantino will stand for re-election in 2027, as stated by Fifa. The Swiss football official declined to discuss his future during a recent press conference at the Women's Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

If elected, Infantino will serve until 2031. However, Uefa has accused Fifa of launching a "smear campaign" against the organization and its leadership in response to the litigation over Infantino's plan. Last week, Uefa filed legal documents in the United States demanding access to evidence and documents from Fifa, threatening to file a criminal complaint in Switzerland.

Although Infantino was initially considered a strong favorite to be re-elected, several football associations, including those from England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland, withdrew their support after the controversial plan was revealed. Uefa remains confident that another candidate can challenge Infantino, as the candidate must secure the backing of at least 106 out of 211 Fifa member associations.
