EU chief unveils $232 million Greenland package as tensions heighten with Trump claims

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen affirmed on Monday that Denmark and Greenland alone should determine the fate of the Arctic territory during a two-day visit to Nuuk, the capital of the Danish autonomous region. In her address, she stressed that the destiny of Greenland is for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide, leaving no room for interference from any other party.

Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump had suggested that Washington should oversee Greenland for national security considerations, although he ultimately ruled out the possibility of annexing the territory through force. Speaking at a press conference alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the inviolability of borders as fundamental principles of international law.

To support the development of Greenland, the EU also unveiled the EU-Greenland Partnership Package, a €200 million investment focused on three strategic priorities: enhancing connectivity, promoting clean energy, and securing critical raw materials.
