Erika Kirk recounts Usha Vance's advice after husband's death: 'Her words are seared into my heart'

One year after her husband Charlie Kirk's assassination, Erika Kirk reflected on her grief in an article titled 'What I've Learned About Grief' published by The New York Times. Charlie, 31, was allegedly shot dead by Tyler Robinson during an event at UVU in Orem, Utah on September 10. Erika wrote the article to share her experiences with anyone who has lost someone they love, is currently grieving, or will in the future.

She recalled her conversation with Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, who offered her comfort by saying, "Just get through the next 15 minutes." Erika described the moment she found her husband's side of the bed, staring at his pillow and contemplating the scent's longevity in sheets. She turned off the light and slept with her 3-year-old daughter, feeling overwhelmed by memories of their ordinary mornings.

Despite the emotional challenges, Erika emphasized that grief is a universal experience and that it doesn't disappear completely but forms a rhythm. She coped with Charlie's milestones, such as his and their daughter's birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, acknowledging the mixed emotions of missing him while still finding joy in life with her children.
