Defence Day: SALU organises speech competition

HYDERABAD: The Students’ Societies Centre (SSC), via the Young Peace and Development Corps (YPDC), orchestrated a speech competition in observance of 6th September Defence Day of Pakistan at Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur. The event, themed “Our Martyrs, Our Pride,” saw students delivering speeches in English, Urdu and Sindhi, offering a platform to voice their perspectives, showcase their communication abilities and honor the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs and defenders.

Trophies and accolades were presented to top performers across the three language divisions. The Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, inaugurated the function. He stated that 6th September epitomizes valor, sacrifice and national unity. Dr. Khushk underscored that the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs embody national pride and stressed that young individuals should draw inspiration from their courage, patriotism, discipline and dedication to the nation.

The orators underscored the historical importance of Defence Day, recalling the bravery of Pakistan’s defenders and the unity exhibited by the populace. They pledged to contribute to Pakistan’s advancement through education, professional grace, responsible citizenship and civic engagement. Trophies and prizes were handed to the top three contenders, including Ms. Ayesha Abid from the Department of Law, Aftab Ali from the Department of English, and Dilbar Khan, who were victorious in the English, Urdu and Sindhi speech categories, respectively.

The adjudicators, Syeda Shumaila Rubab Rizvi, Ms. Varisha and Asad Abbas, judged the contestants based on content, articulation, assurance, body language and overall performance. Asad Abbas also presided over the proceedings and deftly facilitated the competition. Dr. Khushk further urged the students, reminding them that universities bear a crucial duty to cultivate confident, accountable and patriotic citizens.

He noted that whereas military personnel safeguard the country’s boundaries, students and scholars contribute to the nation through classrooms, laboratories, research, innovation and the judicious use of technology. Dr. Khushk solicited the students to excel in their specific fields and deploy their knowledge and expertise to foster Pakistan’s development.

The Vice Chancellor also commended Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Coordinator, Students’ Societies Centre, and YPDC for orchestrating the event and affording students meaningful prospects for learning, self-expression, leadership and personal growth.
