Darius Slayton addresses New York Giants release

Darius Slayton bid farewell to the New York Giants on Monday following the team's release of the 29-year-old receiver, concluding a seven-year tenure that began as a fifth-round pick in 2019. Expressing gratitude for his time in New York, Slayton remarked on his social media platform, "Grateful for my time in NY. 7 years a Giant nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL.

Excited to see what’s next." The 5-foot-11, 185-pound wideout, who survived the initial 53-man roster cut last weekend, was ultimately let go just days before Sunday's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

Signed to a three-year, $36 million contract with a 2026 cap hit nearing $15.9 million, Slayton's departure shields the Giants from approximately $3.16 million in salary this season. However, the team absorbs $12.75 million in dead money now and $3 million in 2027, making the move financially prudent. The core-muscle surgery Slayton underwent in April has prevented him from regaining his explosive speed.

Despite his struggles in the preseason, including playing only 33 snaps and receiving no targets against the Jets, Slayton's career numbers remain impressive: 296 receptions, 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns in 106 games.

As Slayton heads into free agency, Malik Nabers, rookie Malachi Fields, and veterans Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham Jr. are positioning themselves as the Giants' primary receiving threats for the upcoming season. The 29-year-old receiver now enters the market as a low-cost option, six days before kickoff.
