Canadian envoy Christopher Cooter at Idea Exchange: ‘Working together, combining resources, talent, scale, we think India and Canada can be world beaters’

Canadian High Commissioner Christopher Cooter discussed the evolving relationship between India and Canada during a recent event. He highlighted the progress made since former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations against Indian involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Cooter explained that Canada and India have taken steps to rebuild trust, such as holding four meetings between their respective Prime Ministers.

Security concerns have been addressed through cooperation, including the Bishnoi gang being designated as a terrorist entity and the establishment of a financial crimes commission. Cooter emphasized that the two nations are now in a unique position, with Prime Minister Modi equally committed to the improved relationship. Despite potential obstacles, such as individuals seeking to damage the partnership, Canada and India have created institutional linkages to ensure a productive outcome.

The Canadian diplomat also discussed Prime Minister Carney's pragmatic approach, which differs from Trudeau's, and the importance of Canada's economic influence. Cooter emphasized Canada's significant energy reserves and resources, positioning the country as a reliable energy partner for India, along with its critical minerals for the green transition.
