Bhopal BMC Employee Attempts To Set Mayor Malti Rai’s Vehicle Ablaze During Protest, Booked

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters experienced turmoil on Monday afternoon when an employee allegedly tried to set fire to Mayor Malti Rai's official vehicle during a protest. Sunil Gaikwad, affiliated with the corporation's garden section and Samrat Ashok organisation, allegedly entered the premises carrying a bag.

Gaikwad set pages from books ablaze and threw the burning papers onto the Mayor's vehicle, which was parked near the building entrance. Mayor Malti Rai was reportedly in her office on the first floor at the time of the incident. Following the event, BMC Commissioner Sanskriti Jain ordered Deputy Commissioner Hirendra Kushwaha to file a police complaint against the employee.

An FIR was subsequently registered in connection with the incident. Mayor Rai declined to comment on the matter. Security personnel and other employees managed to quell the flames, with guard Ramsingh Yadav removing the burning material from the vehicle. Yadav sustained burns to his hand while attempting to extinguish the fire. Gaikwad also reportedly raised slogans against the civic body, stating that his child had been expelled from school due to the corporation's failure to provide him with a permanent employment status.

Gaikwad is believed to be aggrieved over his employment status, as he had been absent from duty for an extended period. Witnesses also noted that Gaikwad had a bandage on his left hand, suggesting recent medical treatment. The incident highlights the ongoing discontent among BMC employees regarding employment matters. Over 8,200 notices have been issued in connection with the sealing drive in Bhopal.
