Bekaert, con Nuova Icom investimento da 40 milioni e 200 posti di lavoro

In a significant investment move, Bekaert has committed €40 million and will create 200 new job opportunities at its Macchiareddu plant, which will now be taken over by Nuova Icom, a Sardinian metalmechanical company. The investment and employment news were confirmed at a press conference alongside Region of Cagliari President Alessandra Todde, Industry Assessor Emanuel Cani, and Nuova Icom's sole director Alessandro Calledda.

The company, known for producing industrial plants, metal sheeting, piping, and large infrastructures for energy, Oil & Gas, and renewable sectors, will safeguard all current jobs while expanding employment to over 200 workers.

In 2019, Bekaert announced the closure of its Tuscany plant, while the Macchiareddu facility, which produced steel cord components for tires, was recognized as an excellence. The Sardinian company, Nuova Icom, now sees the multinational's departure as an opportunity to expand and build upon a deeply rooted industrial culture on their island. The Region aims to develop a policy that supports companies like Nuova Icom, increasing employment and attracting other major groups to launch new productive sectors.

Nuova Icom, with over a thousand employees and significant national and international clients like Saipem, is set to benefit from a €3 million training program for former Bekaert workers and hopes to attract more large groups to launch new production lines. The company already has active production sites in the Porto Canale area and aims to become a major hub, demonstrating that good industry can thrive in Sardinia.

The acquisition of the plant is expected to be completed by October 15th, with a total investment of €40 million. The company plans to rehire workers for existing productions at the Port of Canale and quickly retrain the facility for new production, focusing on high-skilled workers with strong metalmechanical expertise.
