Australia retain Labuschagne for Test series in South Africa

Sydney: Australia's top-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne has been included in the squad for their upcoming three-Test tour of South Africa, despite a recent poor performance that has raised questions about his international career. Born in South Africa, Labuschagne was dropped from the one-day squad for the southern Africa tour but remains in the 16-member team for the Test series in Durban, Gqeberha, and Cape Town in October.

The squad also includes all-rounder Cooper Connolly, paceman Michael Neser, and left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who were added to the team after Australia's first loss at home to Bangladesh. Labuschagne's recent 36 runs over three innings in the Bangladesh series has sparked debate about his place in the batting order, but chief selector George Bailey remains confident in his ability to contribute positively to the team.

Bailey acknowledged that the entire batting lineup has not been performing optimally, but emphasized that the overall success of the team remains the primary goal. Connolly, who hasn't bowled in recent months, was selected for his middle-order batting capabilities. Neser, also of South African descent, missed the Bangladesh series due to a calf injury but is expected to be fit and ready by the time the series starts on October 9.

Matthew Renshaw, who replaced Jake Weatherald as opening partner for Travis Head in the Bangladesh series, continues to be part of the squad. The series opener against South Africa will be the first Test match between the two nations in South Africa since the ball-tampering controversy at Newlands in 2018. Bailey expressed hope that the focus of the crowd would remain on cricket during the tour, noting the enthusiasm and strong bowling attacks both teams possess.
