As Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sells Over 1 Million Day One, Capcom Says It's 'Focusing on Re-Activating IPs That Haven’t Had a New Title Launch Recently'

Capcom has experienced another successful launch with the video game Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which sold over 1 million copies on its first day of release. This achievement brings the total sales of the Onimusha franchise to more than 10 million units, marking 20 years since the last new game in the series was released. According to Capcom, they achieved this result through various marketing efforts leading up to the launch, including demo releases and hands-on exhibitions, which helped raise awareness among a wider audience.

The company is now looking to re-activate some of its older intellectual properties (IPs) that haven't had a new title launch in recent years. Capcom stated, "In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title."

Several titles from Capcom's extensive catalog have been suggested for this strategy, such as Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, Viewtiful Joe, Breath of Fire, and Lost Planet. Onimusha: Way of the Sword continues Capcom's successful streak, as the recently established Pragmata franchise has also seen strong sales. Capcom has released numerous successful games in the past, including Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma.

Looking forward, upcoming releases include Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Resident Evil Veronica, and Mega Man: Dual Override, with Okami 2 in development by a new studio led by Hideki Kamiya.
