Apple invites developers to submit browser interoperability ideas for Interop 2027

Apple's WebKit team is inviting developers to submit ideas for Interop 2027, the annual cross-browser initiative aimed at improving web interoperability. This effort began in 2022, building on the earlier Compat initiative, and has returned yearly since, with browser makers working to enhance their implementations in areas like CSS features and technologies such as the Navigation API, View Transitions, WebRTC, and WebTransport.

Proposals for Interop 2027, which open on September 3 and close on September 23, must be based on mature web standards and be testable. The company emphasizes that nascent technologies are not suitable for focus areas and that technologies lacking sufficient tests should be proposed as Interop Investigations.

Apple outlines the qualities of a "great" Interop 2027 proposal: specificity, impactfulness, value to developers and users, stability with reference to stable web standards, and testing with existing Web Platform Tests. Developers can submit proposals through GitHub or support existing ones through comments. Apple encourages developers to contribute to existing proposals rather than submitting multiple proposals on similar ideas.
