Anutin defends new Thailand deportation rules for tourists

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has defended Thailand's new deportation rules for foreign nationals, including Israeli citizen Yaacov Ohayon, who was recently deported. Speaking at the Bhumjaithai Party office on September 6, Anutin explained that the new regulations under the Prime Minister's Office Regulation on Deportation B.E.

2569 (2026) aim to remove foreigners whose actions are deemed improper, harmful to Thailand's security, or damaging to the Thai public, regardless of their tourist or resident status.

Ohayon, who was convicted for sending threatening messages causing fear for safety, received a reduced one-month prison sentence and a 10,000 baht fine after pleading guilty. The 15-day term was suspended for two years. Anutin emphasized that the regulation enables the Ministry of Interior to act swiftly against foreigners who violate laws or disrespect Thai customs, while still allowing tourists to enter Thailand.

The premier stressed that Thailand remains a popular tourist destination, but visitors are expected to abide by Thai law, respect Thai people, and observe Thai traditions. Anutin reiterated that the government maintains the authority to deport anyone deemed to behave in a manner inconsistent with these expectations. Ohayon can still appeal the deportation order to the prime minister within seven days of being officially notified, according to Section 8 of the Deportation Act B.E. 2499 (1956).
