Amid another distraction, UNC’s Belichick says program focused on ‘doing things properly’

Chapel Hill, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Bill Belichick stated on Monday that his program maintains a strong commitment to adhering to rules, in the midst of a school investigation into misconduct within his football team.

During a press conference, Belichick emphasized that "obviously everybody’s responsible, including me, for doing things properly," further affirming the team's dedication to maintaining high standards of conduct.

Following UNC's season-opening victory against TCU in Ireland on August 29, the university remained idle until then. However, during that week of respite, General Manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave due to an ongoing investigation by UNC’s Office of University Counsel. Notably, the day Lombardi's suspension began, WRAL of Raleigh reported anonymous sources sharing the nature of inquiries directed towards certain interviewees, some of which targeted Belichick's son, Steve, the team's defensive coordinator who was currently on medical leave.

Michael Lombardi's legal representative, Tom Mars, told The Athletic that the university's investigation had expanded to include potential "inappropriate" relationships, unrelated to his client. Mars, however, has not responded to The Associated Press for clarification on this matter.

Earlier reports indicated that the probe was initially triggered by a human resources complaint from a former employee, which led to Lombardi's suspension. The details of this case remain confidential, as UNC stated that employees and athletes are not permitted to discuss personnel matters, as per standard protocol.

Recent attention on these off-field issues has overshadowed the Tar Heels' recent on-field performance, with Belichick noting that his team had focused more on addressing internal matters and improving both on and off the field. Running back Benjamin Hall echoed this sentiment, stating that the team was entirely preoccupied with internal progress and the upcoming home game against East Tennessee State, and thus, was unaffected by the external distractions.
