AI replacing certain tasks, but not entire jobs: Ong Ye Kung

Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung addressed the impact of artificial intelligence on the job market during the Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum on September 7. He explained that while AI is replacing certain tasks, it is not replacing entire jobs most of the time. Instead, AI is being used as a tool to redesign jobs. Ong emphasized that the impact of AI on knowledge creation and human connection is profound, and both seizing its opportunities and addressing its adverse impacts are crucial.

At the forum, which was attended by around 250 students and academics, Ong highlighted that the job market is becoming more competitive, with fewer graduates securing employment within six months of graduation. This trend reflects the increasing expectations placed on new hires due to AI automation of routine tasks, particularly in industries undergoing significant changes such as electric vehicles and aging populations.

However, Ong assured students that Singapore remains a competitive and growing economy, attracting investments and maintaining a dynamic, open market with strong institutions and political stability. Despite some jobs like programmers, editors, and translators possibly being replaced by AI, Ong noted that "large swathes" of jobs remain relevant, with healthcare workers, in particular, finding AI assistance in reducing routine work.

The minister urged graduates to utilize available resources such as AI tools, career guidance, and career fairs, and to encourage employers to hire candidates holistically, beyond grades and internships, to reflect their resilience, initiative, and character. Ong stressed that the most important aspect is building mastery in one's chosen field, as a degree only opens the door but true success comes from deep expertise in one's craft.
