Africa: UN Adopts 'Equal Earth' Map, Corrects Distortion of Africa's Size

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recently adopted a resolution aiming to promote the use of equal-area world maps, including the Equal Earth projection, to correct long-standing distortions in how Africa and other equatorial regions are represented. Togo's Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, introduced the resolution on behalf of the Group of African States, highlighting the need to correct centuries-old cartographic practices that have disproportionately minimized the size of Africa and other regions farther from the equator.

The resolution, which received widespread support with 164 votes in favor and only one vote against, abstained from voting six countries.

The resolution, titled "Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation and Promoting Equitable Representation of the World’s Regions, Particularly Africa," was adopted by a recorded vote. Dussey emphasized that the initiative is not intended to target any specific country or cultural tradition but rather seeks to promote projections that more accurately portray the true proportions of continents.

He stressed that a fair map does not alter the geography of the world but changes how people perceive it, which can foster greater understanding, respect, and peace among nations.

While the United States voted against the resolution, citing its ideological nature and potential to divert attention from more pressing international issues, the resolution does not seek to replace the Mercator projection in areas where it remains useful, such as maritime and aerial navigation. Togo pledged to lead efforts to encourage wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection, starting with revisions to its educational materials.

The resolution is non-binding and will be pursued over the next six months, with efforts to involve AU member states and supporters from other regions in promoting alternative map projections.
