AfD wins big in German regional election, falls short of outright majority

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved a significant win in a regional election, garnering 43.8% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, a state in eastern Germany. However, the party fell short of securing an outright majority, securing 39 seats out of 83 in the state legislature. This result prevented AfD from forming a far-right government in Germany for the first time since World War II.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who leads the center-right Christian Democratic Union party, saw a major decline in his support, dropping from 17.2% to 15% and winning 15 seats. The center-left Social Democrats and the Greens also saw a decrease in their support, with 9.3% and 8.9% respectively. The Left Party won eight seats each. Turnout was high at 77.8%.

AfD's candidate for governor, Ulrich Siegmund, expressed that the party had a mandate to govern and would not engage in forming a minority government. However, it remained unclear how his divided opponents could form a stable government without AfD. The result was a significant blow to Merz, whose party had ruled Saxony-Anhalt for 24 years.

AfD is seen as a significant opposition party in Germany, with a strong presence in the eastern, formerly communist regions. The party advocates for policies such as "remigration," or the deportation of immigrants, and refuses to engage with mainstream parties in government.
