Abia ranks among top states in revenue, capital growth – Report

Abia State Government has showcased significant fiscal and infrastructural growth between 2017 and 2026, securing a prominent position among the top-performing states nationally in revenue growth, capital spending, and service delivery. Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed this information during a briefing on the State Executive Council meeting presided by Governor Alex Otti.

According to the 2026 Budget Report and the Phillips Consulting State Performance Index, Abia ranked second in aggregate revenue growth and third in Gross State Revenue growth nationwide. The state also topped in total expenditure growth, capital expenditure growth, and personnel expenditure growth, while maintaining relatively low overhead costs.

Both reports highlighted Abia's rapid improvement, placing it as the 3rd fastest-improving state with a score of 0.67 basis points, trailing Enugu (1.15) and Jigawa (0.77). The state's success is attributed to adept resource management and prudent administration. Kanu emphasized the government's commitment to serving the citizens' best interests, citing the distribution of three million treated insecticide-treated nets worth over ₦1bn across 17 Local Government Areas in September to combat malaria.

Additionally, the Community-Based Health Insurance Programme has seen 270,739 enrollees so far. Plans include the launch of the Ameke Community Scheme for September 16, 2026, with 1,000 individuals enrolled at ₦18,000 per person. Infrastructure developments include a road extension, flood patrol project, and the expansion of ticketing facilities at Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal.
