The European Union's foreign representative, Kaja Kallas, abruptly canceled the planned formation of an expert group aimed at strengthening Europe's defense policy due to resistance from government representatives. A Brussels-based EU official stated that some member states believed this was not the right approach at the moment.

Following discussions with ministers, it was decided not to pursue the initiative further. Information from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur revealed that German and Italian governments had initially opposed the expert group, which was intended to be overseen by Kallas and develop proposals for closing gaps in Europe's conventional military capabilities.

Member states were supposed to include leading political and military representatives from several EU countries, as well as the United Kingdom and Ukraine, who were to present the report with concrete recommendations on Monday morning. Reasons for Germany's denial of the expert group were not officially disclosed, but it is believed that the German government had recently expressed criticism towards Kallas and favored planning processes in NATO.

Berlin is currently advocating for merging a large portion of the expert group led by Kallas with the EU Commission. Meanwhile, it was reported that the foreign service intended to continue working on defense issues and explore new cooperation opportunities with EU countries. The official added that the diagnosis had not changed: Europe must move faster in defense.
