Western Michigan president confirms there will be no appeal after Saturday’s controversial loss to Michigan

Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna confirmed on Sunday that there will be no appeal following their 13-12 loss to Michigan in Saturday's game. The controversy arose when Michigan's Bryce Underwood threw a Hail Mary touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan with one second remaining on the clock, following a review that added the second back to the clock.

Kavalhuna stated during a news conference that he had sought to appeal the decision but found no avenue to do so. He emphasized that he did not perceive any unfairness or impropriety in the process, describing it as a discrepancy between the viewing public's view and the officials' review. Despite fan dissatisfaction, Kavalhuna maintained that Western Michigan handled the situation appropriately post-game and would continue to do so.

The school now faces the challenge of recovering from this loss and preparing for their upcoming home opener against Monmouth on Saturday, marking the start of the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Michigan will take on Oklahoma at the Big House next Saturday at noon ET.
