Vikings safety Harrison Smith puts retirement on hold to come back for a 15th season

Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith has decided to come back for a 15th season with the team. The Vikings announced on Saturday that they had reached an agreement with the six-time Pro Bowl selection, who has dedicated his entire career to the Minnesota franchise. The exact terms of the contract have not been disclosed. Smith had hinted at the end of last season that he was uncertain whether he would retire or return to play in 2026, and his future had been a topic of speculation throughout the offseason.

At 37 years old, Smith is one of only four players in NFL history to have accumulated 50 tackles for loss and 100 passes defended while playing at least 200 career games. The others in this exclusive group are Charles Woodson, Brian Dawkins, and Ronde Barber. Smith has recorded 21 1/2 career sacks and 39 interceptions, placing him behind only Barber in those categories.

With 207 career games played, Smith holds the record for the most appearances by a Vikings defensive back, ranking fifth in franchise history. He has started 203 games, placing him third in team history behind Jim Marshall and Mick Tingelhoff. Smith has been selected to the Pro Bowl five consecutive times from 2015 to 2019, and he also appeared in the Pro Bowl in 2021. He earned All-Pro honors in 2017 and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2018.
