UN’s Nepal chief makes emotional plea for flood-ravaged country

On August 26, a catastrophic flood along the China-Nepal border devastated mountain communities, killing at least 1,384 people and leaving over 5,500 missing. The United Nations' Nepal chief, Lila Pieters Yahia, visited the affected areas and made an emotional plea for aid on Sunday. She described the sudden transformation of lives, as homes, livelihoods, loved ones, and breadwinners were lost within a matter of minutes.

Over 800 foreigners, including tourists and pilgrims, are among those missing in both Nepal and Tibet in China.

The UN has launched a $50 million appeal to assist the over 84,000 people affected by the disaster. Many communities remain inaccessible due to destroyed roads and bridges, making aid delivery challenging. Pieters Yahia warned of the risks of disease outbreaks, particularly cholera, due to the destruction of infrastructure and the ongoing monsoon season.

She emphasized the urgent need for international support, stating that Nepal, a largely rural nation of 30 million people, lacks the resources to cope with the crisis on its own.
