Two separate fires linked to electric bikes reported hours apart in Toronto

Two fires possibly linked to electric bikes occurred in Toronto on Sunday, hours apart. The first fire was reported in an alleyway in the north end of the city just before noon, caused by an e-bike battery. Two individuals were taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation after the blaze was extinguished. Later, a second fire erupted in the east end of the city approximately two hours after the first incident.

Firefighters extinguished the second fire on the ground floor of a building and are investigating whether an e-bike was involved. Toronto Fire Services reported 93 fires involving lithium-ion batteries in 2026 so far. Lithium-ion batteries, which power e-bikes and other devices, can ignite if damaged or charged incorrectly. To prevent lithium-ion fires, Toronto Fire advises using only safety-tested and certified devices, following manufacturer instructions for charging and storage, and storing batteries away from flammable materials.
