Trump administration focuses on boosting oil output, Wright says

The Trump administration is prioritizing the increase of crude and fuel supplies, according to Energy Secretary Chris Wright. In an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation, Wright stated that the government is exploring all avenues to reduce prices for American citizens, but the primary focus is on maximizing production and adding energy. Wright emphasized that addressing a supply shortage requires increasing supply.

The soaring US retail diesel prices, which reached record highs due to conflicts in Iran and Russia disrupting oil flow and cutting refining capacity, have disproportionately affected various sectors such as agriculture, transportation, and construction. On Saturday, diesel averaged $5.90 per gallon nationwide, as reported by AAA.

Speculation has arisen about the possibility of the Trump administration implementing an export ban on US crude and refined products. However, President Donald Trump and top cabinet officials have consistently dismissed this notion. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum had expressed in May that such a decision would be detrimental economically, geopolitically, and for affordability.

Wright acknowledged the complexity of the diesel situation, exacerbated by drone strikes damaging Russian refineries and Moscow's ban on fuel exports. Nonetheless, he reiterated the importance of keeping as much energy flowing as possible, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
