The Diplomat Star Rufus Sewell Played A Founding Father In An Acclaimed HBO Miniseries

English actor Rufus Sewell is best known for his portrayals of American characters in shows like The Diplomat and The Man in the High Castle. However, he gained some recognition for playing a significant historical figure in the acclaimed HBO miniseries John Adams, which aired in 2008. The series detailed the founding of the United States from the onset of the Revolutionary War to the period following John Adams' presidency.

Starring Paul Giamatti as John Adams, the miniseries featured several other major historical figures, including Alexander Hamilton, who was portrayed by Sewell in just two of the show's seven episodes. Despite the limited screen time, Sewell's portrayal of Hamilton had a notable dynamic with Adams, as the two initially worked together to establish the U.S. but later became estranged due to policy disagreements.

John Adams received critical acclaim and is often considered a must-watch historical drama, winning 13 Emmy Awards, a record for a limited series at the time. Surprised by the limited scope of his role, Sewell admitted in a 2015 interview with Decider that he wasn't aware he would only appear in two episodes when he signed on for the series.

He prepared extensively for the role, delving deeply into Hamilton's life, but found that the portrayal in John Adams differed from his expectations. He described Hamilton as more of a "greedy schemer" than a "tireless worker bent on stabilizing the young American nation." Despite these differences, Sewell still considers his role in the miniseries as part of his work with American characters on TV.

He will revisit his role as Hal Wyler, played by Keri Russell, in the upcoming Season 4 of The Diplomat, set to premiere on Netflix in October 2026.
