Students from a Colombian School Win a Robotics World Championship in the US

A team of twelve high school students from the Columbus School in Envigado, Antioquia, Colombia, emerged victorious at the youth robotics world championship in the United States. The group, known as the Lightning Blue Lizards, competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition category for youths aged 14 to 18. The students secured the Engineering Inspiration Award, one of the three most prestigious prizes in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

This accomplishment was made possible after the team participated in the regional youth robotics competition in Miami, where they also received the Engineering Inspiration Award, which qualified them for the world championship.

The Engineering Inspiration Award highlights the team's dedication to expanding access to STEM and robotics through initiatives with partner schools and younger students. By working with communities with fewer opportunities, the students are inspiring curiosity, confidence, and new possibilities in areas that often seem inaccessible. The team faced additional challenges during the world championship, including disassembling and reassembling their robot during a flight from Florida to Houston. Representing Colombia alongside 19,000 students from various countries, the Lightning Blue Lizards participated in FIRST's annual robotics season theme, which this year focused on archaeology. The theme encouraged students to explore how discoveries from the past can inspire future innovations.

The Lightning Blue Lizards also received the Team Spirit Award, celebrating enthusiasm, energy, and commitment to collaboration, support, and interaction with other teams. This recognition emphasizes that true success is measured by the positive impact on others, not just individual achievements. The team's experience in the world championship comes seven years after their previous attempt, reinforcing the school's commitment to values like responsibility, respect, inclusion, and citizenship.
