Solar power reduces universities’ energy costs – FG

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, revealed that off-grid solar solutions are being implemented in universities to improve learning conditions. These off-grid solutions are being implemented through the Energising Education Programme led by the Rural Electrification Agency. In an interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, Alausa highlighted the challenges that power instability has posed to academic stability, scientific research, and campus living.

He emphasized the necessity of transitioning tertiary institutions off conventional transmission lines and into dedicated solar mini-grids in order to ensure uninterrupted power supply. This move would prevent recurring power outages in lecture halls, student accommodations, laboratories, and hospitals. Alausa pointed out that the financial burden of high energy costs and unreliable power supply has been a significant strain on university finances.

He explained that instead of spending millions of naira on electricity bills, these funds could be used for expanding faculties or purchasing equipment. Alausa reaffirmed that providing constant, self-sustaining power to universities is a key aspect of the government's human capital development strategy, aiming to make Nigerian universities globally competitive research centers.

He also announced the establishment of the Renewable Energy Asset Management Company to ensure the sustainability of the mini-grids implemented.
