Saudi coffee utensils highlight heritage and hospitality traditions

Traditional Saudi coffee tools are deeply rooted in the country's heritage and embody the values of hospitality and generosity. These utensils play a pivotal role in every step of the coffee-making process, from roasting beans to serving the final drink. The mahmassa, a traditional iron or copper tool, is used for roasting beans over fire or embers, with designs varying by region.

After roasting, the beans are cooled in the mabrada, usually crafted from local wood. The roasted beans are subsequently ground using the najr, which is also used to mix coffee with cardamom and other ingredients. The sound of the grinding in the najr is linked to welcoming guests and signaling the arrival of coffee in social gatherings.

The dallah, one of the most prominent utensils, is central to hospitality traditions. A strainer is used to remove coffee grounds and spices before serving, while the shatt carries small coffee cups, showcasing practicality and the organized presentation of hospitality.
