Prohibited lands, KCR’s absence set to dominate Telangana Assembly proceedings

The monsoon session of the Telangana legislature is set to commence on September 7, 2026, after the budget session concluded on March 30. This session is anticipated to be marked by intense discussions on various matters, primarily revolving around the inclusion of private lands on the prohibited list under Section 22A of the Registration Act.

The opposition parties, BRS and BJP, are prepared to highlight the government's perceived double standards, which include providing land to private individuals while targeting those of private landowners.

The Congress party, in power, is expected to present a factual account of the issues arising from the introduction of the Dharani portal, which has caused significant distress to landowners due to its technical flaws and failure to update information. The ruling party plans to point out the inclusion of lands on the prohibited list under the previous BRS rule, along with the number of registrations facilitated by easing regulations to favor those with political connections.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has challenged Opposition leader K. Chandrasekhar Rao to either attend the assembly proceedings or resign from his position, citing his absence from the House for most of the last three years. During this period, the government has spent over ₹22.38 crore on Rao's salary, security, and other facilities.

The BRS leadership has expressed their intention to pressure the government on the implementation of six guarantees made to unemployed, youth, and students. The session will also witness debates on proposed changes to polytechnic courses, fee reimbursements to students, and other initiatives such as Kalyana Lakshmi/Shaadi Mubarak.

Assembly Speaker G. Prasad Kumar and Council chairman G. Sukhender Reddy have reviewed the session arrangements with senior officials, urging them to prepare responses to likely questions from opposition members. The Home Department has been directed to enhance security measures around the legislature premises, while ensuring that protests or dharnas are not facilitated.
