President Zardari, PM Shehbaz honour martyrs, reaffirm national resolve on Defence Day

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside Pakistan's highest military officials, paid tribute to the country's armed forces heroes and veterans on Sunday, marking the 61st Defence and Martyrs' Day. President Zardari lauded the "timeless stories of courage and patriotism" displayed by the martyrs, while Prime Minister Shehbaz described September 6 as a "glorious chapter" in the nation's history.

Defence and Martyrs' Day was observed to honor the martyrs and Ghazis, and reaffirm Pakistan's commitment to defending its motherland against all threats. On this day in 1965, Indian forces crossed the border under the cover of darkness to launch an attack, but the nation successfully thwarted the enemy's nefarious plans. September 6 remains a powerful symbol of national unity, courage, and resolve, reminding people of the Pakistani nation's unity during the 1965 War.

The day started with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals, followed by a change of guards at the Quaid's Mausoleum in Karachi. Special prayers were held in mosques for the country's progress, prosperity, and the independence of Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed their commitment to national security, sovereignty, and peace. President Zardari, speaking on behalf of the entire nation, saluted the martyrs, veterans, and their families, highlighting the "timeless stories of courage and patriotism" they left behind. He emphasized that September 6 is a significant event in national history, commemorating the sacrifices made to preserve Pakistan's freedom, sovereignty, and security.

The president underlined the importance of the unity and spirit of faith demonstrated by the Armed Forces and the nation on September 6, 1965. He noted that this spirit was once again evident in the success of Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, which continued the patriotic and freedom-loving legacy of the day. The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement further showcased Pakistan's commitment to regional security and its growing role as a dependable partner for peace and stability.

However, President Zardari stressed that there could be no compromise on Pakistan's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security, and called on the international community to recognize the importance of resolving the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
