PNGRB-EESL MoU to drive smart PNG metering

The Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to advance India's City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector through the widespread deployment of Smart Domestic Piped Natural Gas Meters. This move is expected to bring about significant improvements to the PNG ecosystem, making it more efficient, transparent, safe, and secure for millions of consumers.

The smart meters will offer advanced features such as digital monitoring, tamper alerts, leak detection, remote operations, and robust cyber-security measures. With PNG connections rapidly expanding in urban and semi-urban areas, traditional manual meter reading and billing systems may encounter increasing challenges related to accuracy, revenue assurance, safety monitoring, and customer service.

The partnership between PNGRB and EESL combines the former's regulatory expertise with the latter's experience in demand aggregation and large-scale smart-metering programs. The initiative is set to benefit stakeholders from various states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
