Pharmaceutical technologists threaten to down tools over new guidelines

Over 11,000 pharmaceutical technologists are threatening to stop working in protest of new guidelines limiting their ability to practice in Level Three to six health facilities. The Pharmacy and Poisons Board adopted these guidelines, reserving these roles for only degree-level qualified practitioners, while those with diploma-level qualifications will manage dispensaries.

Kenya Pharmaceutical Association Chairman, Chitechi Amboka, called the guidelines discriminatory, stating they strip qualified diploma-holders of the right to handle essential medicines. Amboka emphasized that pharmaceutical technologists make up over 70% of all healthcare professionals and play a vital role in daily healthcare operations.

He warned that the guidelines, set to take effect in January, risk causing a healthcare system collapse as the government implements Universal Health Coverage. Amboka vowed to protest on Thursday and called for the withdrawal of the guidelines, urging the Ministry of Health and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board to conduct a consensus-driven review.

Kenya National Union of Pharmaceutical Technologists Chair, Kenneth Omogi, also opposed the guidelines, saying they are inconsistent with established laws and would harm the UHC agenda. However, the Health docket Cabinet Secretary dismissed these claims, stating that no practitioners will be barred from pharmacy roles if they have the necessary qualifications and are licensed.
