OPINION: Dying for the Story: Nigeria’s journalists, one death too many and the families left behind

The recent deaths of four highly respected Nigerian journalists have once again highlighted the perilous nature of their profession. The country mourns the loss of Dotun Oladipo, Sola Olugbemiro, Pius Opute Orezimena, and Patrick Osadebamwen, each having lost their lives within a single week. These journalists left behind families and colleagues, grappling with the reality that they were often the first to arrive at scenes of tragedy and the last remembered when it took their lives.

As the media community grapples with this tragic cycle, one cannot help but question the support system currently in place for Nigeria's journalists. The daily struggles faced by these professionals, who risk their lives to expose corruption, fight for justice, and give voice to the voiceless, often go unnoticed until tragedy strikes.

The government may require their favorable coverage during campaigns, while corporate organizations may prioritize publicity over the welfare of the newsrooms. Media organizations themselves grapple with shrinking revenues, leaving journalists to bear the burden of survival. The result is a profession where many journalists work tirelessly, living precarious lives, with limited financial security, healthcare, and retirement benefits.

The life of a Nigerian journalist is a paradox, respected by society yet often underappreciated and unsupported. As the profession continues to confront this uncomfortable reality, the question remains: who is ensuring the well-being of these dedicated professionals while they are still alive?
