Newly-wed couple found dead in Sasthamcotta Lake in Keralam
The couple had married four months ago after being in a relationship, despite strong opposition from both their families
A young couple, newlyweds Rajeev, 26, and Abhirami, 19, were discovered dead in Sasthamcotta Lake near Ambalakkadavu, Kerala on Sunday, September 6, 2026, where police suspect the incident to be a case of suicide. Abhirami's body was first recovered from the lake in the morning, followed by Rajeev's body approximately 50 meters away during rescue operations.
The couple had tied the knot four months ago despite opposition from their families. Living in a rented house, they had no contact with their relatives. Rajeev worked as a cleaning staff member at a nearby school. The police had previously met the couple last month to resolve family issues. Following an autopsy, the bodies were handed over to the family.
The Sasthamcotta police have opened an investigation into the incident. A suicide prevention helpline (DISHA - 1056) is available for those in need.
