New Delhi building collapse kills 1, traps others

On Sunday, a building collapse in New Delhi tragically resulted in one death and left several others trapped, according to officials. The affected structure, a five-story building housing a boys' hostel, stood in Satya Niketan, a densely populated area close to a Delhi University campus known for private student accommodations. The exact number of individuals still trapped remained unclear; however, the Press Trust of India reported that dozens of residents were living in the building.

Lawmaker Anil Sharma confirmed that some victims had been rescued while several others were trapped, desperately attempting to make phone calls for assistance. Rescue teams from the police, firefighters, and India’s disaster response agency worked tirelessly to clear rubble and reach those in distress. As of the reports, at least two people were hospitalized in critical condition.

The origin of the collapse remained unknown. Building collapses are a persistent concern in certain parts of India during the monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September. During this period, heavy or prolonged rainfall can weaken aging structures, posing significant risks to residents.
