Minnows Augsburg sink Frankfurt to top Bundesliga table

On Sunday, Bavarian football team Augsburg staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1, securing a top spot in the Bundesliga standings after just two matches. This marks the first time in the club's history, which joined the top division in 2011, that they have ever opened a round in first place.

Mainz further bolstered the Bundesliga leaders' position with a dominant 5-0 victory over Hamburg, while the Bundesliga record for consecutive top spot finishes was interrupted by Bayern Munich's scoreless draw at Schalke on Saturday. This drew the Bavarians' 67-matchday winning streak atop the table to an end after more than two years.

Augsburg's coach, Manuel Baum, expressed the significance of the win, saying, "People live for moments like this." He added, "When we see each other in a few years, we'll tell stories about how we were the ones who topped the table with Augsburg. That's something to enjoy for a day." Baum even took a screenshot of the standings to commemorate the historic achievement.

The winning goals for Augsburg came from Arijon Ibrahimovic, Robin Fellhauer, Alexis Claude Maurice, and Fabian Rieder, with Jonathan Burkardt scoring the opening goal for Frankfurt. Earlier, Mainz's Phillip Tietz scored twice, while Sheraldo Becker, Phillipp Mwene, and Ransford Koenigsdoerffer were also on target in their 5-0 win.
